July Games with Gold: Celebrate More Great Games for Xbox One and Xbox 360

In the mood for a little action this July? How about a little salsa? What about ... blocks? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, we’ve got some good news for you: Games with Gold has you covered with three fantastic titles this month for Xbox One and Xbox 360. As usual, all games are available only for a limited time*, as part of the Games with Gold program, so jump on them while you can!

"Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition" by DrinkBox Studios (Xbox One, $14.99 ERP):

Coming July 2, "Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition” is a challenging brawler/platformer, arriving via the ID@Xbox self-publishing program for Xbox One.

You play Juan Aguacate, a masked Mexican wrestler on a quest to save the President’s daughter from the evil, skeletal Carlos Calaca – you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll elbow-drop jaguars.

More than just a meticulously balanced brawler, though, “Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition” features cleverly hidden secret areas, a vibrant world of wonderment built around the Mexican land of the dead, and a creative ability system that allows for ever-increasing exploration and rewards.

“Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition” will replace June’s Xbox One Games with Gold title “Halo: Spartan Assault” so be sure to grab it while you can!

"Gotham City Impostors" by Monolith Productions, Inc. (Xbox 360, $14.99 ERP):

Available July 1-15, we have “Gotham City Impostors,” a multiplayer, first-person shooter based on DC Comics’ Batman universe.

Here, two teams of six players face off against each other using a variety of Batman- and Joker-themed weapons in good ol’ deathmatches. Raucous fun, and plenty of it to be had for fans of blowin’ stuff up.

"BattleBlock Theater" by The Behemoth (Xbox 360, $14.99 ERP):

Available from July 16-31, experience “BattleBlock Theater”! You’ve got nowhere to go but up ... on stage. Play single player or co-op to free your friends and save Hatty Hattington!

Jump, solve and battle your way through a mysterious theater inhabited by highly technological felines.

So, fancy a trip to the Mexican land of the dead? How about a desert island filled with sadistic cats? Or maybe Gotham City? You can do it all for free in July on Xbox Live. Check out the full details on our Games with Gold program, and make sure you get in on the action while you can!

*Titles are available as free downloads for a limited time, for qualifying paid Xbox Live Gold members in all markets where Xbox Live is available. Some regions may offer different titles depending on market availability.

Kinect 2.0 PC release date is July 15, according to Microsoft Store listing

Voice and motion sensing device priced at £159/$199

The second generation Kinect sensor will be released for Windows PCs on July 15, according to a Microsoft Store product listing.

According to the store page, the PC version of the Xbox One voice and motion sensor will carry a £159/$199 price tag.

However, Microsoft released an Xbox One without Kinect for the first time in June 2014.Kinect originally came bundled with every Xbox One unit and was billed as a mandatory and deeply incorporated component of the new console.

Confirming that the Kinect PC sensor and SDK (software development kit) would be released in 2014, Kinect for Windows director Bob Heddle said last year it would enable a new wave of "innovative touch-free applications" for PC.

Unlike the original Kinect for Xbox 360, which was fully interoperable with Windows PCs via official drivers, it was also confirmed that the Xbox One Kinect sensor will not be compatible with PC.

Heddle said: "We're continuing our commitment to equipping businesses and organizations with the latest natural technology from Microsoft so that they, in turn, can develop and deploy innovative touch-free applications for their businesses and customers.

"A new Kinect for Windows sensor and software development kit (SDK) are core to that commitment.

"Both the new Kinect sensor and the new Kinect for Windows sensor are being built on a shared set of technologies. Just as the new Kinect sensor will bring opportunities for revolutionizing gaming and entertainment, the new Kinect for Windows sensor will revolutionize computing experiences.

"The precision and intuitive responsiveness that the new platform provides will accelerate the development of voice and gesture experiences on computers."

Xbox One now supports trial and unlock game demos

Microsoft mulling better visibility for ID@Xbox titles.

Look on the Xbox One store and you still won't find many game demos. It's something users have asked Microsoft to encourage, and it sounds like Microsoft is listening.

Microsoft has recently updated the console with the same game trial functionality found on Xbox 360 - where you can download an Xbox Live Arcade title as a free demo and then pay to unlock the full version without downloading the game again. It's not something any available games currently make use of, but future titles are free to.

"When Xbox One launched you could do game demos and you could do games. But we didn't have the functionality that was on Xbox 360 - that 'trial' experience where you could download a demo and then convert it [to a full version]," Microsoft's ID@Xbox boss Chris Charla has told Eurogamer.

"But now we do. In the same way that we update the Xbox One OS every month, they update the development system every month - or regularly, anyway. So that's something that we recently turned on. I don't think we've seen any ID@Xbox games yet that have shipped with trials, but we may well in the future. It's something that's open to everybody."

And as for the main portion of the Xbox One store, Microsoft is considering ways of making ID@Xbox titles easier to find.

"At the beginning of the day and the end of the day, on Xbox One a game is a game is a game," Charla said - a qualifier that Microsoft has given in the past to explain why there are no filters for finding specific types of games. "They won't be segregated in any way at all.

"Saying that, we have had a lot of player requests for some way to specifically find the ID@Xbox games," he admitted, "so we have talked about adding some functionality so that people can do a search for just the ID@Xbox games.

"But anything we did like that would be in addition to our core values which are that they are in the store with everything else."

After a slow start, the pace of ID@Xbox releases now seems to be increasing. June saw four titles launch in one week, including Sixty Second Shooter Prime and Outlast. And there are plenty more on the way, Charla concluded.

"You can expect lots more games coming," he said. "There are literally hundreds of ID@Xbox games in development right now." Many will be out this year, but still more have been locked in for release further in the future. "There a lot in development for 2015, and some for 2016, too."

It's promising news - although questions around the Xbox One's dev kit and launch parity game policies remain.

Xbox One Getting Digital Game Preorders "Soon," Dev Says -- Will You Use It?

Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games says the functionality should be available sometime before launch in October.

Xbox One owners will be able to preorder a digital copy of Insomniac Games' upcoming stylized shooter Sunset Overdrive "soon," the developer has confirmed, suggesting the this option could be rolled out as a new system feature in the not-too-distant future.

During the latest episode of Sunset TV (above), Insomniac Games community manager Brandon Winfrey responded to a fan question about if they would be able to receive the Sunset Overdrive Day One Edition content if they buy a digital copy of the game. He said, "Yes, if you preorder the game digitally, you will get the Day One Edition content. You can't preorder it digitally yet, but soon you will be able to."

Winfrey also teased that people who buy Sunset Overdrive digitally will receive a "nifty gifty exclusive," though no other details were provided. Sunset Overdrive launches exclusively for Xbox One on October 28.

Microsoft's Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, said last month in an interview with IGN that digital preordering functionality has not been forgotten and its introduction is "on the roadmap" for a future Xbox One system update. Spencer is also aware that fans would like to see digital pre-loading available on Xbox One, pledging that this functionality, too, is on Microsoft's radar.

Last month, Sony introduced pre-loading support for PlayStation 4.

Xbox One Sales More Than Double in June with New $399 Option and Unveiling of Holiday Games Lineup

Over the past month, we’ve seen a strong spike in interest in our Xbox One console options, including the new $399 offering, and the amazing lineup of games announced during E3. Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9th, we’ve seen sales of Xbox One more than double* in the US, compared to sales in May, and solid growth in Xbox 360 sales.

We’re excited to welcome so many fans to Xbox this summer and we can’t wait for them to get their hands on the wide selection of new games available this year on Xbox One, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, and Ori and the Blind Forest. Xbox One is the only place you can play these games along with creative independent titles and blockbusters such as Assassin’s Creed Unity, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny, Evolve, Grand Theft Auto V, and dozens more. We’re honored that Xbox One was awarded with the best games line-up of 2014 by game critics at E3 and our fans have a lot of amazing new games to look forward to in the coming months.

Starting in August with the release of Madden NFL 15, new blockbuster hits will launch for Xbox One at an incredible pace throughout the fall, as we head into the holiday season. Gamers love the holidays and we are lining up incredible deals and special promotions to celebrate. The fun is just getting started and we can’t wait to share more exciting news soon.
